Instructions to build a monument model for the Comenius school project

Step 1

Choose a representative monument of your town to build.  If you want a project  more open, you can brainstorm ideas such as  monuments from your country.

Step 2

Visit the monument with students. Take pictures of it and note the size and shape of it. If possible, take a trip around the monument to look at the type of architecture.

Step 3

Write a small report. Justify your choice and some information about it.

Indicative building instruction

  • The style of the monument will set the way it will be made.

  • Fill the boxes with newspaper. Tape all box flaps closed.

  • Arrange the boxes into the desired shape. Use tape to hold multiple boxes together. You can also draw the outline of each wall shape onto paper. Add tabs to each side of each piece. Glue the tabs together to create a 3D shape.

  • Arrange the monument onto a large piece of cardboard. Glue the buildings to the cardboard with craft glue.

  • Cut out rectangles from cardstock to make roofs for each building. You can also fold larger pieces of paper into a roof shape. Look at pictures of real buildings for design inspiration. Glue the roofs to the top of the buildings.

  • Paint the buildings with poster paint. Add details with small brushes. Allow the paint to dry.
