V Comenius Meeting  (Reus, Catalonia)

Meeting Minutes

Date: 19th April 2015 – 25th April 2015

Tittle of meeting: V Comenius meeting of the project “Let’s discover hidden talents”

Location: Reus (Tarragona), Catalonia - Spain

Attendees: Representatives of project partners from Turkey, Greece, Lithuania, Catalonia in Spain and Poland- according to the list of attendance.

Holding a Comenius meeting is something special. All staff, students and host families were eager to meet our guests. On the one hand, all together, we worked hard to get ready for the meeting. The school was decorated with posters and boards that exhibited some information about the different countries participating in the project, a research done by students. Moreover, there were some murals displaying pictures of all our held meetings and Comenius activities.

On the other hand, we showed them a bit of our everyday life at school, culture, traditions and language as well. During the week, we all shared moments that will stay in our memories forever.

19th  April 2015

Project partners from Greece, Turkey, Lithuania and Poland arrived at the airport in Barcelona. Our headmistress Teresa Gassull, head teacher Mar Cervantes and teachers Hector Sierra, Sara Ferrer and  Noelia Pecino welcomed them.

We arrived at our school were all host families were waiting for Comenius students. They all were excited.

20th April  2015

A welcoming festival was held in the morning when our guests arrived. Our students performed some traditional dances and rhythms of our city. We displayed some videos about our city and country. Afterwards, our headmistress welcomed them. Then we had a coffee break and all staff welcomed them as well. After the break, we

moved around our city to make our guests discover Reus and its modernist route. Previously, our students had worked on modernism and some modernist buildings and were in charge of guiding them, giving all explanations in English. Our  students were engaged, positive and great guides while away and made the sightseeing truly enjoyable for everyone there.

Later, the mayor’s representative welcomed us at the town hall.

For lunch we stayed at the school where we enjoyed some Catalan dishes. It was really pleasant gathering around the table and eating together.

In the afternoon, two different activities were done with our upper students and Comenius students. We divided the students into two groups and one part had some music lessons and the other one did a research on Europe band by doing a webquest. The webquest activity was really good to promote cooperative learning and unite the group.

Once the school time finished, our host families had a welcoming party for Comenius students.

In the evening, Pompeu Fabra teachers and Comenius partners had supper together.

21st April  2015

We went on a trip to Barcelona to experience the vibrant style of the city and Gaudi’s architecture. We were out the whole day. We walked through Passeig de Gràcia and enjoyed Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. After having lunch, we visited Sagrada Familia. All guests were impressed by the city and the culture and had a great time.

22nd  April  2015

We went to a recording studio to record our project anthem. There, children and teachers sang together our anthem Let’s discover hidden talents. It was amazing performing the song all together and discovering how a recording studio works. Everybody enjoyed it a lot and had fun.

Later, when we arrived at school, Comenius coordinators held a meeting to talk about coming activities and activities already done for this year meanwhile the other Comenius teachers and students and some Pompeu Fabra upper students did an art craft workshop.

For the lunch, we gathered all together at the school. It was a moment of relax and enjoying each other's company.

In the afternoon, we had prepared a special activity for our guests: a human tower workshop. There is an important tradition of building human towers in our city. Some human tower builders came to our school and showed us how to build the towers. Moreover, they gave our Comenius partners the possibility of building a small tower. It was exciting.

In the evening, we visited Tarragona a little bit and had supper there.

23rd  April 2015

That day was a special date for us since we celebrated Saint George’s day. In the morning, Comenius students and 6th/5th level students did a cooperative working activity that consisted on making a dragon book mark, a typical character of Saint George’s legend.

Later on, Comenius teachers and students practiced the Catalan vocabulary for the Comenius quiz and had some music lessons to practice the Comenius songs that were going to be performed the following day at our Music Festival “Be a rock star”.

After having lunch, students and teachers went to Mercadal Square where there were some book stands. There we enjoyed Saint George’s day atmosphere and saw a lot of rose stands (on that day women gave their couple a book and men gave a rose as a gift)

In the evening, we went to Mercadal Square again where some human towers were built due to Saint George’s festivity. Builders let us help them at the base of the tower. It was spectacular.  Afterwards, we enjoyed the festive atmosphere.

24th April  2015

That day we held a music festival and the closing ceremony. All students from our school performed some English songs for Comenius friends. Previously, Comenius students and our upper students had already studied two different songs, Carrie and Knock, knock, knocking on heavens door, so that they could sing all together. At the end of the festival, we tested our guests’ knowledge about Catalan language in a special quiz.

After having lunch, we did an orientation race and played a traditional Catalan game called Bitlles catalanes. We divided students in five different groups mixing them. All students had fun and learnt how to get orientated in a park.

That day students were very sad because the meeting came to an end and our guests were leaving and had to say goodbye. During that week they learnt how to comunicate with each other using English language and how to share and live with children from other countries and culture. It had been an amazing experience!

In the evening, all teachers had dinner together.

25th April  2015

Our Comenius partners came back to their corresponding countries. It had been a really satisfactory meeting. During that week we understood best how Comenius project broke down boundaries. We lived and shared moments difficult to forget.

No words can express our gratitude to our host families for all efforts they made so that our Comenius students feel at home (having dinner all together, holding a party, gathering and going out together...). Definitely, Comenius experience is different. The days go by, but memories will stay forever.
